Our origins are in the local communities of Queensland's Wide Bay Burnett region. Wide Bay Capricorn Building Society was formed in 1979 as the result of a merger between the Burnett Permanent Building Society (based in Bundaberg) and the Maryborough Permanent Building Society, both of which had operated since the 1960s. Founder of the Burnett Permanent Building Society in 1966 Ron Hancock, said "We started the local building society to provide an alternative to the big banks". In 1981, Wide Bay Capricorn amalgamated with the Gympie and North Coast Building Society and in 1983 another merger occurred with the Gladstone-based Port Curtis Building Society. Wide Bay Capricorn Building Society Ltd was listed on the ASX in 1994. In the 2000/01 financial year Wide Bay exceeded $1 billion in assets and loans under management. From a strong support base in Central and South-East Queensland, we have expanded nationally. This culminated with a name change to Wide Bay Australia Ltd in December 2003. In 2008, Mackay Permanent Building Society Limited merged with Wide Bay Australia. This move strengthened our representation in Central and North Queensland with additional branches and customers. In 2013, the decision was made by Wide Bay Australia's board of directors to convert to a bank. The decision was based on a number of reasons including the geographic limitations of the Wide Bay name, the added 'security' that banks are perceived to offer, and the fact that many of our customers already believed we were a bank. On April 1st 2015 Auswide Bank was launched and continues to foster the aims of its predecessors, established to co-ordinate the joint savings of members to foster home ownership in the community. We have made home ownership more achievable for thousands of people by providing affordable, fully featured home loans. Auswide Bank provides a range of exciting personal and business banking products to customers across Australia. On December 16th 2015, Auswide Bank announced a strategic partnership, the first of its kind in Australia, with peer-to-peer lender MoneyPlace, announcing both a 20% equity stake and a commitment to fund consumer lending. On December 22nd 2015, Auswide Bank announced a merger with the Brisbane based Queensland Professional Credit Union (trading as Your Credit Union). The merger was completed on May 20th 2016 following the overwhelming support of Your Credit Union members. Following the merger, Auswide Bank’s assets exceeded $3 billion.
